O&P Business News Publishes Cover Story on Group Response to Help Victims of the Boston Marathon Bombings

Thorofare, NJ – O&P Business News, a SLACK Incorporated publication, has published a cover story on the O&P community’s response to help the Boston Marathon bombing victims quickly gain access to prosthetic devices and resources. The article is posted online at, the online home of O&P Business News. Published since 1991, O&P Business News is the definitive information source for orthotic, prosthetic, pedorthic and affiliate professionals.

The July 2013 issue of O&P Business News features a cover story entitled “O&P Groups Respond to Boston Marathon Tragedy,” an article explaining how O&P professionals quickly mobilized to aid the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings and their families on April 15, 2013 – the day two explosive devices detonated at the race’s finish line – and in the days thereafter. Three died and hundreds were wounded in the attack. Some lost limbs at the scene, while others had limb loss in the following days and weeks. Immediately following the bombings, members of the O&P community organized support for the victims and their families by raising funds to lessen the psychological and financial stress caused by insurance issues.

Due to the rapid response of the O&P community, amputees have not only been given access to prosthetic devices and resources, but they also are being provided with a means of financial support, insurance fairness and peer counseling during their road to recovery.

“The O&P industry was swift to respond to the Boston Marathon bombings – caring, treating and supporting the victims,” said Joan-Marie Stiglich, ELS, Senior Vice President of SLACK Incorporated. “O&P Business News sought out their key sources to provide perspective on the Boston Marathon bombings to our readers and educate prosthetists on lessons that can be learned from the tragedy for the good of patient care.”

To ease the financial burden on victims and their families, support groups such as One Fund Boston have been established to raise money to cover the medical costs for the uninsured or underinsured. Additionally, some hospitals are working hand-in-hand with insurance companies to organize payment plans for patients, while other organizations are offering prostheses and peer counseling.

O&P Business News delivers timely, accurate, authoritative and balanced reports on business topics, clinical issues, reimbursement, governmental rulings and significant industry developments, as well as presenting clinically relevant information for the benefit of the patient.
