What is a copyright?
Copyright is a form of protection grounded in the U.S. Constitution and granted by law for original works of authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression. Copyright covers both published and unpublished works.
When do I need to request permission?
You must request permission whenever you want to use any of SLACK Incorporated's materials, whether for commercial or non-profit usage.
What details does SLACK Incorporated need in a permission request? Please submit your request in writing and tell us how, what, when, and where you will be using the requested material and the number of copies you will be using.
How do I submit a permission request to use material from a SLACK Incorporated Journal or Newspaper? How long does it take to receive permission?
A permission request containing detailed information will take approximately 1-2 weeks. It may be necessary for SLACK Incorporated to return incomplete requests for additional information.
If my permission request requires a fee, how should I send in payment? Once you receive a response from SLACK Incorporated on your original request, please send a check to: SLACK Incorporated, 6900 Grove Rd., Thorofare, NJ 08086. Your original permission request MUST accompany payment. Checks must be drawn on a United States bank in United States dollars.
Can I receive permission from an author to use his/her material? No, permission can only be granted directly from SLACK Incorporated.
If I am the author of an article or a book, do I need to request permission to re-use my own material in future publications? Yes, authors must submit a permission request each time they plan on re-using their material.

What rights do I retain as an author? You may use portions of or your entire article for commercial use; however, there is a charge. Please contact SLACK Incorporated for more information.

Can I post a link on my Web site that links directly to an online article? No, you may only post a link directly to the homepage of any of SLACK Incorporated's Web sites. (Example: For OCULAR SURGERY NEWS you may post the link www.OSNSuperSite.com). When you post a SLACK article online, you are violating our rights of copyright.
Is there a percentage of copyrighted work I can use in a classroom discussion or a podium presentation without having to request formal permission? Abstracts of articles can be used without submitting a permission request. However, for anything other than an abstract, please contact SLACK Incorporated with each request.
If I have received permission once to photocopy an article, do I need permission subsequent times for different purposes? Yes, all permission requests are for 1-time use only. With each additional use, you must contact SLACK Incorporated.
