Topical fluoroquinolones provide excellent treatment in pediatric patients for moderate to severe eye infections and also ear infections, such as acute otitis externa. Fluoroquinolones offer activity against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Fluoroquinolones have an excellent delivery vehicle and are easy to dispense in children. These agents do not sting or burn or cause systemic side effects. Through the sponsorship of Alcon, Infectious Diseases in Children assembled a panel of three ophthalmologists and three otolaryngologists to discuss the best and appropriate care for both ear and eye infections in the pediatric patient. I would like to thank the sponsor, Alcon Laboratories, Inc., and the panel members for their participation. Philip A. Brunell, MD |
